Botox®/Jeuveau®/Xeomin®

COSMETIC DERMATOLOGY

Botulinum toxins are safe and reliable options for anti-aging treatments. There are several brands of botulinum toxin which have been FDA Approved, including Botox®, Jeuveau®, and Xeomin®. They are very similar medications. In just a few minutes, botulinum toxin can be injected into the skin to help ease lines and wrinkles. Botulinum toxins work by helping to weaken and relax the muscle into which it is injected. This results in decreased contraction of the muscle, producing a less wrinkled and smoother appearance of the overlying skin. The lines and wrinkles which had been produced by the action of the muscles gradually lessen and fade, and in some cases disappear.

Frequently Targeted Areas

Some of the frequently targeted areas for botulinum toxin include:

  • The glabella, or area between the eyebrows. This area is also known as the frown lines or 11’s, as frowning frequently produces two short parallel lines resembling the number eleven. This is the area where botulinum toxins are probably the most effective and produce the most noted improvement.

  • The horizontal lines or creases across the forehead. This is probably the second most effective area to target with botulinum toxin, and can result in a subtle lifting of the eyebrow by a skilled injector.

  • Crow’s feet or lateral eyes. Botulinum toxins produce a more subtle but noticeable reduction of lines in this area.

  • Perioral, or upper lip lines. These are produced through the years from smoking, pursing the lips, puckering, etc.

  • “Gummy smile”, where an excessive amount of the gums show above the teeth with a wide smile.

  • Bands and Wrinkles of the Platysma, the thin sheet of muscle over the front of the neck.

Choosing the Right Treatment Areas

At your consultation and treatment, your doctor will evaluate which areas may be most appropriate for treatment. Once treated, results may not start to be noticed for approximately 3-5 days, and could take up to 7-10 days for maximum benefit. The benefits last approximately 4-6 months, and then gradually begin to fade away. The treated areas do not look worse after botulinum toxin injections, but many patients really enjoy the look with botulinum toxin injections, and can notice a gradual reduction in appearance as it wears off. This is usually the best time for re-treatment. Many patients will notice the effects of botulinum toxins tend to be more prolonged after a regular series of injections. In other words, they may tend to last longer as you receive them more routinely. Many patients will combine botulinum toxin with other procedures such as dermal fillers or laser resurfacing in order to achieve maximal improvement.

Any potential side effects usually tend to be minor, such as redness, bruising, or swelling, and tend to resolve within hours or days. Rarely, a droopiness of the eyelid could result, which resolves usually within weeks. You may wish to discuss any concerns you have for potential side effects with you doctor prior to receiving treatment.
