Dermaplaning: The Safe Way to Make Your Skin Glow

We all want more vibrant, youthful, glowing skin. I know I do! As a practitioner in dermatology, I’m often asked for my recommendations on how to achieve this coveted glow. There are a number of procedures that I recommend to my patients to accomplish this goal. Dermaplaning is one subject that has been a frequent topic of discussion.

Dermaplaning is an exfoliating treatment that has been around for decades; most popular amongst celebrities. Recently however, this procedure has gained in popularity due to the increased media attention it has received. So what’s so great about this procedure? Dermaplaning is a non-invasive exfoliating procedure that involves removing dead skin cells and “peach fuzz” from the epidermal surface of the skin using a surgical blade. This helps improve skin texture, skin tone and decrease the appearance of pores revealing skin that feels and looks refreshed and vibrant. Another important benefit of removing the epidermal cells and hair is that your skin care products, prescription medications, chemical peels and other skin care procedures, will penetrate deeper and more efficiently  into your skin -not to mention how smooth your makeup will apply without that extra fuzz-.

Are there any side effects? No. There is a popular belief that once your hair is shaved, it will grow back thicker and/or darker. This is just a myth. Just like shaving, dermaplaning does not affect the hair follicle therefore, the hair will regrow the same as it did prior to the procedure.

Is there any downtime? No. As soon as the procedure is done you may return to your normal daily activities. If you wish, you can even apply makeup directly after, although you may not want to cover up your smooth, glowing skin.

Who are the best candidates for Dermaplaning? Anyone with dull, sensitive, mild scarring, superficial hyperpigmentation, or rough or dry skin. It is safe for expectant mothers as well as nursing mothers. For those who are not pregnant or nursing, Dermaplaning can be used in conjunction with other skin care procedures such as chemical peels.

Dermaplaning is a great procedure to add to your skin care arsenal and as we near the most vibrant season of the year, it is the perfect time to realize your own glow.
