Approaches to the Aging Neck

The neck is a window to our true age. A combination of genetic, anatomic, physiologic, and environmental factors converge to display patterns of aging unique to the neck. These changes include loss of subcutaneous fat, gain or inappropriate distribution of subcutaneous fat, muscle banding, jowling, excessive skin laxity due to loss of collagen, dilation of blood vessels, and pigmentation changes. There are a variety of treatments at a dermatologist’s disposal to address these many issues and reverse the outward signs of aging.

Kybella

What it is: An injection that destroys localized fat cells.

Pros: The first and only injection for sub-mental fat reduction (double chin). Nonsurgical and has minimal downtime. Results in as little as 2 injection sessions. May also result in skin tightening.

Cons: Injections commonly cause temporary swelling, bruising, and numbness. It can only be used in the central, upper neck.

CoolSculpting

What it is: A suction device cools the skin to destroy the underlying fat cells.

Pros: Nonsurgical. Procedure and post-procedure period are relatively painless. No inflammation and no downtime. Also produces some skin tightening.

Cons: Must have the proper distribution of fat for the procedure to be effective.

Liposuction

What it is: The surgeon uses a suction device to remove fat and tighten the skin of the neck.

Pros: Dramatic results typically only require one session and can be customized to any area of the neck.

Cons: Requires the use of local anesthesia, small incisions, and can require a few days of downtime and compression to the treated areas.

Secret RF

What it is: Radio frequency assisted micro-needling. Small needles deliver heat energy to the dermis, tightening and stimulating collagen growth.

Pros: Nonsurgical skin tightening. Very little pain or downtime. Can be used safely on any skin color. Will improve fine lines as well.

Cons: Does not affect fat. May need multiple treatments for dramatic results.

Laser/IPL

What it is: Superficial imperfections such as pigment or blood vessels are removed with light energy.

Pros: The only effective treatment for superficial color abnormalities in the skin. Minimal discomfort and minimal downtime.

Cons: Doesn’t tightening the skin or decrease fat. Typically used to complement other procedures. May require multiple treatments.

Nectifirm

What it is: A topical cream combining peptides, plant extracts, antioxidants, and other biotechnological blends that work cohesively to create a smoother, younger-looking neck, decolletage, and jawline. The use of this cream helps with the prevention of early to moderate signs of aging on the neck and decolletage.

Pros: Noninvasive topical that you can apply at home. It helps the skin appear firmer and lifted, reduces the appearance of rough, crepey skin, smooths the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This would be a great product to use in addition to one of the aforementioned procedures for maintenance.

Cons: This product has to be applied twice per day with consistency for 8-12 weeks before you begin to notice results. Results vary.
