Liposuction

Liposuction is most safely performed under local anesthesia, known as tumescent anesthesia, in an outpatient surgical setting.  This allows the patient to avoid the risks associated with general anesthesia.  A local anesthetic/saline solution is gently infused into the fatty layer of the skin, producing light pressure, or “tumescence”.  This not only produces excellent numbing of the tissues, but also greatly diminishes potential blood loss from the capillary vessels interwoven in the fat.  Thus the need for blood transfusions and potential for a long recovery time is eliminated.  A special small fat extractor is then introduced through a small skin incision that is usually less than one-half inch in length.  Within a matter of minutes, the fat cells are suctioned and removed.  This process is repeated across the desired areas of treatment and in a short time, the procedure is complete.

Patients are required to wear special compression garments over the treated area.  These garments can normally be worn under clothing.  They are kept in place for several weeks and are important in supporting the skin in order to help it remodel to the desired shape.  After the first day of recovery, patients are encouraged to walk and resume normal activities in order to assist in the healing process.  Strenuous exercise should be avoided the first few weeks.

While not a treatment  for generalized obesity, this surgical technique is ideally suited for the removal of localized fat deposits in the face, neck, hips, buttocks, abdomen, flanks, and male breasts.  The focus of liposuction is the reduction of inches and volume, not weight loss, although it is expected for some weight loss to occur.  It is commonly performed in conjunction with other procedures, such as minimal incision face lift, mini-tummy tuck, or CoolSculpting®.  Combining liposuction with face-lifting decreases the length of incisions necessary for a facelift alone.  The removal of fat in these areas gives a more youthful post-operative appearance.  The use of tumescent liposuction greatly enhances the aesthetic results while minimizing the need for more invasive surgical lifting procedures.

Mini Tummy Tuck

The mini-tummy tuck surgery is a surgical procedure meant to address a protruding tummy, excess hanging skin, or extra folds of abdominal skin. The mini-tummy tuck surgery is also referred to as a mini-abdominoplasty.  A mini-tummy tuck can restore loose or hanging skin, creating an abdominal profile that is smoother and firmer. A mini-tummy tuck is not a weight loss solution or an appropriate alternative to exercise.  The mini-tummy tuck focuses on the removal of excess or redundant skin.  It does not involve the abdominal muscles or reconstruction of the belly button as in many traditional abdominoplasties.

A mini-tummy tuck surgery may be appropriate for you if:

  • You are physically healthy and at a stable weight

  • You have realistic expectations

  • You are a non-smoker

  • You are bothered by the feeling that your tummy is too large or sagging

The most common mini-tummy tuck incision is horizontal, placed just within or above the pubic area. The length of the incision, which extends laterally toward the hip bones, depends largely on the amount of skin to be removed. The contour of this incision can vary according to the structure of your abdomen and the style of bathing suit or undergarments that you prefer. Your surgeon will try to keep the incision within your bathing suit lines, but this may not always be possible.  Unless you gain or lose a significant amount of weight or become pregnant, your abdomen should remain firmer and flatter for many years. However, gravity and the effects of aging will eventually take their toll. If, after a period of years, you again become dissatisfied with the appearance of your abdomen, you may choose to undergo a second procedure to restore a more youthful body contour.

A mini-tummy tuck and liposuction are surgeries, and surgeries have inherent risks that should be discussed well in advance with your doctor.
