Bleharoplasty (Eye Lift)

Cosmetic Dermatology

The eyes are one of the most apparent physical characteristics we notice about others and ourselves.  They are also an early area to observe the inevitable aging process.  As we age, wrinkles, lines, and bags form around the eyes.  Our upper eyelids may begin to lose elasticity and sag.  In addition to the unsightly appearance, this may impair our vision.

Cosmetic eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, can help to improve sagging eyelids and excessive fat folds around the eyes.  During the procedure, your doctor will remove excess skin and fat, which can cause drooping of the eyelids, from your upper eyelids.  This results in a more rested and youthful appearance with less heavy appearing eyelids.  Blepharoplasty is often combined with other procedures such as botulinum toxin, minimal incision facelift, or fractional CO2 laser resurfacing in order to help your face and skin appear younger.

The Procedure

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and takes approximately 1-2 hours to complete.  You will leave with stitches in the folds of the eyelids.  Once the stitches are removed in 1-2 weeks, the tiny scars fade into the natural skin texture are are hidden when the eyes are open.  Most patients are delighted with the results of eyelid surgery.  Because sagging and heaviness of the lids are minimized, people who undergo blepharoplasty look more rested and youthful.  Most patients can reasonably expect the area around their eyes to look younger after blepharoplasty.

There is expected to be some temporary bruising and swelling of the area for several days, but otherwise significant complications are rare.  You may wish to discuss any concerns you have for potential side effects with your doctor prior to receiving treatment.
